In such ideal circumstances, chronology would (or should) have determined the order of publication – in other words, Bentham’s works would have been published in the order in which they were written, except where, for thematic reasons, a special argument could be made for grouping together works produced at different times. An alternative approach might have been to publish, in the first instance, those works which were considered to be the most important. But such an approach would run into the insuperable problem of deciding which volumes were in fact the most important.

As we have seen, Dumont produced five major French recensions of Bentham’s work between 1802 and 1828. Despite the historical importance of these texts in making known Bentham’s ideas, they are not being included in the new edition (an exception has been Political Tactics, where the only surviving version of much of the text is that of Dumont). Rather, we are returning to the original manuscripts to produce the texts as Bentham himself intended them to appear. 17 This work presents an important and highly original analysis of fallacious political arguments, the motives which give rise to their employment, and the measures which can be taken to counteract them.

It seems to me that it would make more sense for individuals to specialize in two or three of these areas, rather than to expect each individual to be an expert in all. For instance, one individual might have greater aptitude for transcription and textual editing, while another might have greater aptitude for researching and writing the annotation. Instead of a particular individual taking responsibility for each and every one of these editorial tasks on a particular volume, the volume would move through the hands of several individuals, each of whom would be an expert in one or two tasks.
