11 Experience was to prove him to be a zealous, intelligent, and tolerably discreet pensioner. He possessed, in short, a liberal selection of the qualities which might be considered desirable in a British secret agent. 13 The recommendation was accepted: Gedda was furnished with a cipher, was provided with the reassuringly English alias of "Wilkinson," and was promised an annual salary of £200, 14 paid through the canal of successive Dutch ministers to Sweden, who also obligingly undertook the care of Gedda's correspondence.

He had gone to the Hague, as he was later to inform Fox Lane, "to instruct myself in the affairs of the Barrier and of the trade of the Austrian Netherlands": very necessary information, no doubt, for a resident at Brussels. But before he had a chance to apply it he found his career abruptly cut short. 43 The scanty details of this disheartening experience are to be found in a letter from Goodricke to Fox Lane, written in January 1757, and now preserved among the Chatham Papers in the Public Record Office,44 in which Fox Lane was asked to do what he could to recommend Goodricke to Pitt.

62 Perhaps it was; but it was certainly not the true reason, as Holdernesse himself perceived. 63 The Hat Senate, in short, saw Goodricke as they had seen Campbell—as the ally or agent of the queen; and they declined to receive him, not on any grounds of foreign policy, still less on a point of ceremony, but because they feared English meddling in matters which were of purely domestic concern. There is nothing to suggest that their fears were justified; but in 1758 it was still too early for any Swedish minister to forget the crisis of 1756.
